King’s Hawaiian Rolls at Costco
I love getting my King’s Hawaiian rolls from Costco due to their quality and value. You can often get double the amount for the same price as at local grocery stores. They are sold in a 2-pack with each tray containing 16 small rolls. The cost for these 32 Hawaiian rolls is usually around $6 (as of 2024), which is usually how much I would pay for one tray (16 rolls) at my local grocery store!
Not only are they priced well, these rolls are the perfect accompaniment to many entrees like ribs or brisket. They can also be used to make mini sliders. Sometimes, I will enjoy them as a quick breakfast with some hard boiled eggs, fruit and coffee.
Tips for Perfect Cheesy Hawaiian Rolls:
- Shred your own cheese: Opt to shred your own cheese rather than using pre-shredded varieties, which often contain anti-caking agents that can affect how well the cheese melts. It’s a little more elbow grease but well worth the effort, in my opinion.
- Scaling Up: If you’re hosting a larger group or want leftovers, simply double the recipe. If you’re using King’s Hawaiian rolls from Costco, they usually come in 2 trays of 16 rolls. Leftovers can be frozen and reheated in the microwave or oven/air fryer.
Ingredients:
- Hawaiian Rolls: I’m using King’s Hawaiian rolls from Costco for this recipe. They are pillowy soft with buttery notes and a slight sweetness that pairs perfectly with the garlic and parmesan. However, you can use any dinner rolls for this recipe. I recommend brioche rolls as they have a similar buttery flavor and pillowy texture.
- Melted butter: Use unsalted if you can as the parmesan and cheese are naturally salty.
- Olive oil: The combination of garlic, butter, and olive oil are too good to pass up, but if you prefer a more buttery flavor for your rolls, you can substitute the olive oil with an additional 3 tbsp of butter.
- Shredded cheese (choose your favorite variety): I used cheddar and mozzarella for this recipe, but feel free to use your favorite combination of melty cheeses. Pepper Jack, Fontina, Swiss, or Provolone are great options. Avoid cheese that don’t melt well or have an overpowering flavor like blue cheese.
- Minced garlic: I have found fresh garlic to work best for this recipe. If you prefer a more muted and subtle garlic flavor, substitute with 1/2 tbsp of garlic powder.
- Italian seasoning: Contains rosemary, thyme, oregano, and other herbs that pair beautifully with the garlic and parmesan.
- Fresh chopped parsley: You can substitute with a tablespoon of dried parsley.
- Grated parmesan: It wouldn’t be garlic parmesan rolls without parmesan.
- Additional parmesan for garnishing (optional)
Directions:
Prepare the Rolls: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Make diagonal cuts in each Hawaiian roll to form an “X,” being careful not to cut all the way through. Do not pull apart the rolls and keep them intact.
Add the Cheese: Place the rolls in an oven-safe pan or baking dish and tuck shredded cheese into the cuts you’ve made. Be gentle not to pull apart the bread pieces. If some of the pieces come apart in the process, don’t fret. Once the cheese has melted you can stick them back on like glue.
Mix the Topping: In a small bowl, combine melted butter, olive oil, minced garlic, Italian seasoning, and chopped parsley. Mix well.
Apply the Topping: Generously brush this flavorful mixture over the tops and sides of the rolls, ensuring good coverage for maximum flavor.
Bake: Put the rolls in the oven and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 8 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the tops of the rolls are golden brown.
Serve: Remove from the oven and sprinkle with additional grated parmesan if desired. Serve immediately while warm and melty.
