Homemade Chili Oil

Make your own chili oil at home

Ingredients
  

  • 3/4 cup neutral oil canola, vegetable, or avocado oil work well
  • 1 tbsp crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 tbsp Korean red pepper flakes ("gochu garu")
  • 1 tbsp minced garlic (about 3 cloves)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 star anise *optional

Instructions
 

  • Add oil and aromatics (cinnamon stick, bay leaf, and star anise) to a pan and allow to cook under medium-low heat for about 10 minutes
  • Add the remaining ingredients to a heat safe bowl then slowly pour in your oil a little bit at a time. Be very careful not to pour too much oil into the bowl at once or it may overflow.
  • Once the chili oil has cooled, store in an air tight container in the refrigerator for up to several months.
