If you are looking for a quick and easy weeknight meal that packs a flavorful punch, look no further than this wonton soup recipe using frozen wontons from Costco. Using store-bought wontons saves time and effort compared to making homemade wontons, making this recipe a convenient option for busy nights.
Using frozen wontons from Costco saves so much time
Bibigo’s chicken cilantro wontons are a delicious and versatile option for this soup. **Disclosure: I have partnered with Bibigo in the past for sponsored posts, so I can attest to the quality and taste of their products. They are sold in 3 lb resealable frozen bags in the freezer section at Costco. The wontons are already cooked so they just take a few minutes to boil.
For those who may be sensitive to cilantro flavor, I highly recommend you give these a try. The chicken filling is tender and the cilantro flavor is very subtle.
You can make chicken wonton soup with store-bought or homemade chicken broth
I like to make homemade chicken bone broth using the leftover carcass of a Costco rotisserie chicken. You can find my recipe here: Homemade Chicken Bone Broth. I keep batches of the bone broth in my freezer to use for soup dishes such as this one. If you don’t have time to make your own broth, store-bought chicken broth works just as well.
How to make wonton soup broth
To add even more flavor to the broth, I recommend sautéing green onions, garlic, and ginger before adding in the broth. For an extra burst of flavor, you can also pound the white part of the green onions with the handle of your knife before cooking. If you prefer a smoother broth, you can also grate the garlic and ginger instead of mincing them with a knife.
What is the difference between soup soy sauce and regular soy sauce?
When it comes to seasoning the broth, it’s important to note the difference between soup soy sauce and regular soy sauce. Soup soy sauce is a more concentrated and flavorful version of regular soy sauce and is specifically formulated to be used in soups. It can be found at most local Asian grocery stores. You can substitute for regular soy sauce in the same amount for this recipe but may need to add additional salt to taste.
Wonton soup add-ons and variations
To make this soup even more filling, you can add additional vegetables like bok choy, mushrooms, or spinach. For a heartier dish, you can also add shrimp or cooked noodles to make wonton noodle soup.
Wonton soup toppings and garnish
Toppings are optional, but I like to add chili garlic sauce or chili and garnish with additional green onions or cilantro at the end.
Wonton Soup
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp oil Avocado, canola, or any neutral flavored oil will work
- 2 tsp minced garlic
- 1/2 tsp minced ginger
- 2 green onion stalks Plus additional for garnish
- 10 cups chicken broth I used homemade chicken bone broth but you can use store bought broth
- 4 tbsp soup soy sauce You can substitute soup soy sauce with regular soy sauce but use a little less
- 6 cups frozen wontons I use Bibigo chicken cilantro wontons from Costco
- 1/8 tsp ground white pepper You can use black pepper
- Chili garlic sauce or chili oil for topping *optional
Instructions
- In a medium pot, bring water to a boil and cook the wontons according to package instructions.
- Use the handle of your knife to pound the white part of the green onion stalks into the cutting board to release the flavors
- Add oil to another large pot and saute green onion stalks under medium heat for about a minute and then add garlic and ginger. If you don’t like garlic and ginger chunks in your soup, grate it into the pot. Saute until the garlic just starts to turn golden.
- Carefully pour in the broth and allow to simmer for 15 minutes, then use tongs to discard the green onion stalks.
- Add soup soy sauce and white ground pepper to broth. If the broth is not salty enough, add regular salt as needed to taste.
- Add the cooked wontons to individual bowls and ladle in the broth. Garnish with green onions and top with chili garlic sauce or chili oil to add a spicy kick (*optional)
