Why You’ll Love This Pomegranate Citrus Mocktail
This mocktail is not just visually stunning but also packed with refreshing flavors that are sure to please any crowd. The tangy notes from the orange, the subtle sweetness from the pomegranate juice, and the fizzy seltzer create a delightful balance that’s both invigorating and satisfying. It’s a perfect drink for the holidays or any special occasion, and it’s so easy to make that you might find yourself reaching for it even on a regular weeknight.
5 simple ingredients
For the Pomegranate Ice Molds:
- Pomegranate juice: Rich in antioxidants, this juice is slightly sweet and tart, pairing perfectly with the sweet citrus flavors. I used POM Wonderful 100% pomegranate juice for this recipe which I picked up from Costco.
- Oranges or clementines: Adds a burst of sweet citrus flavor to the ice molds. I prefer to use clementines as they are sweeter than oranges and have a distinct flavor that complements the pomegranate beautifully.
For the Sugar Rim:
- Sugar: I used plain white granulated sugar, but any type of sugar will work.
- Orange zest: The natural oils from the orange zest infuse the sugar with a vibrant aroma and flavor.
For the Mocktail:
- Flavored seltzer or sparkling water: I used La Croix tangerine-flavored seltzer which is sold at Costco, but any sparkling drink will work.
- Agave nectar: Adds a mild sweetness to balance the tartness of the pomegranate and citrus. If you don’t have agave, use a simple syrup which can be made by mixing equal parts sugar and boiling water. Let sugar dissolve and once the syrup has cooled, you can add it to your drink.
How to make pomegranate mocktails
1. Prepare the Pomegranate Ice Molds:
Slice the clementine or orange into small segments. Pour pomegranate juice into ice trays, and add a citrus segment to each mold. Freeze overnight.
2. Prepare Your Sugar Rim:
Pour sugar onto a small plate and add the zest of one citrus (about 1 teaspoon). Mix well. Use a small citrus wedge to wet the rim or side of your glass, then dip the rim into the sugar to create a sweet, zesty coating.
3. Assemble Your Mocktail:
Add a citrus slice to the bottom of each glass, then drop in a pomegranate ice mold (or as many as will fit). Pour the seltzer into the glass, sweeten with agave nectar, and give it a gentle stir. Garnish with an additional citrus slice on the rim, and serve immediately.
Tips for making the best mocktail
- Ice Molds: Making pomegranate ice molds in advance not only chills your drink but also slowly releases pomegranate flavor as the ice melts, enhancing the taste over time. I used 1.9″ x 1.9″ silicon ice molds from Amazon for this recipe. Feel free to use any ice mold of your choosing.
- Sugar Rim: Adds a slight sweetness with every sip as well as visual contrast, giving the drink a frosted look.
- Customization: Feel free to use different citrus fruits or add a splash of lemon juice for an extra zing. Of course, this drink is alcohol-free but feel free to jazz it up with your choice of spirits.
